Kasel Associated Industries Recall Because of Possible Salmonella Health Risk

From the FDA website:

Kasel Associated Industries Recalls All Products Manufactured at its Denver, Colorado Facility from April 20, 2012 thru September 19, 2012 Because of Possible Salmonella Health Risk

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – February 19, 2013 – Kasel Associated Industries of Denver, CO is voluntarily recalling ALL PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED AT ITS DENVER, COLORADO FACILITY FROM APRIL 20, 2012 THRU SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 due to possible Salmonella contamination. Salmonella can sicken animals that eat these products and humans are at risk for salmonella poisoning from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the pet products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these symptoms after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has any of these signs, please contact your veterinarian.

The recalled Products of Dog Treats were distributed nationwide through various retailers from April 20th to September 19th.

Kasel Industries is recalling Boots & Barkley, BIXBI, Nature’s Deli, Colorado Naturals, Petco, and Best Bully Stick items. Lot numbers as shown in 1 Year Best By Date Table and 2 Year Best By Date Table, which are attached.

  1. Christ, April through September? It took that long to notice?? I was a fan of Bixbi, not so much now, as I thought they made their own.

    • Robert – you will need to contact either the manufacturer or the stores – both of them should have the information you need.

    • Kasel makes the Boots and Barkley line of dog treats, sold at Target nationwide. The line that “Kasel Industries has not received any reports of illnesses to date in connection with these products” is inaccurate.

  3. I have a bag of the 2/5# Nature’s Deli chicken Jerky with the identical UPC but the Best By date is 120413, does this mean mine is safe? Have been using it off and on for a couple of weeks with no apparent ill effects.

  4. I started buying liver from Whole Foods (grass fed, no antibiotics, etc.) and drying it. Then I tried drying sweet potatoes. Dogs say “yum”. Ordered buffalo knuckles from the same organic supplier from which I ordered my own meat. My “acceptable” dog treat manufacturer list is very short: Zukes, K-9 Granola Factory, Wildside (kangaroo only), Stella & Chewy’s, Alaska Naturals. I feed Fromm (Zeus didn’t like Orijen — my pick).

Hoping those brands are okay. Any input from anyone otherwise is welcomed.

  5. If you look back on the past recalls Kasel has been re-calling all this crap for some time…..

  6. Do you know of any recall on Dogswell Vitality Chicken Breast…..on the bag it says cage free chicken, No byproducts, NO BHA/BHT, no antibiotics, no salt, no horemones, no artificial flavor, no fillers, no wheat, flour, corn, soy or sugar. Then on the bottom of the bag, so small you can hardly read it….made in China…thanks if you know anything.

    • I did see Dogswell brand in an earlier recall. I won’t feed anything that says it was made in any other country…especially China. Recall or not.

    • Dorothy, The Dogswell Vitality Chicken Breast sounds great…..until you get to the part about being made in China. I personally wouldn’t feed my dog anything made in China.

    • Dorthy, Dogswell treats are made at a plant in china that has been connected to treats made with the illegal antibiotic residue found in them, as stated in another article on this site. I forwarded that concern to a local holistic pet store of mine and she forwarded the concern to her dogswell rep who replied to me with the following statement “I am sorry to hear you are beginning to have doubts about the safety of DOGSWELL® treats. We take safety seriously. Our material suppliers are certified clean and clear of contaminants. If a raw ingredient does not meet their specifications and pass safety tests, the ingredient is rejected and never enters our processing facilities. Moreover, we strive to use products from suppliers that treat animals humanely and pride ourselves in using only healthy cage-free chickens and ducks. On rare occasions we do get supplied by Shandong Honva however this is not to cause alarm since every brand has a different recipe and every batch is different. Furthermore, at DOGSWELL® every batch of jerky that we produce is tested on-site. Once the products are in the United States, they are then tested at a U.S. –based independent third party laboratory that follows FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and APPA (American Pet Products Association) approved methodology for harmful contaminants, such as melamine, cyanuric acid, E. Coli and salmonella. No product has ever tested positive for harmful ingredients or antibiotics.
Please let me know if you have further questions.”

All that being said, I hadn’t ever bought them in the past and I definitely won’t now. No china products for my pets. I would worry about at least contamination from other batches made for other labels.

  7. We’ve used Natural Balance for 3 years now and have NO problems. There was a recall of the “mother company” of Natural Balance last May but NB itself had no problems. They sent out a voluntary recall to put peoples minds @ ease since they do show as a subsidiary but that was unless as NB has its own manufacturing plant here in USA. Great food with no worriesbecause the company has integrity.

    • They have a very poor history with many recalls and very little candor when it comes to their products liability. In the 2007 melamine disaster, it was found in their grain free products and this “rice protein concentrate” should not have bee present, doesn’t sound like a ;lot of integrity to me. They also use China for their product, the vit slurry and who knows what else. I would home cook before using their products.

  8. There’s another, more detailed, FDA report out:

This update states that various retailers, including Target, Petco, Sam’s Club, and Costco sell Kasel-made treats. These may be under their own store brand names. Products have a shelf life of 2 years.

It’s tricky to figure out if Kasel is the manufacturer. Target’s products list Target Corp. as the “distributor,” but never mention Kasel. I had to do online research to find out that Kasel was the manufacturer.

  9. Susan, Someone should suggest to Michael Moore to make an expose of the pet food industry, it seems to be right up his alley

  10. I purchased a 3-lb. bag of Colorado Naturals Chicken Jerky in December 2012 and fed it to my four greyhounds for several weeks. All four greyhounds had bloody diarrhea and intestinal problems. I treated them over and over with flagyl and other aids, took fecals to the vets, etc. I finally noticed the recall notice and quit feeding them the chicken jerky. I contacted Kasel Industries on four occasions. They requested that I send my product back and they would refund me. I did so via Priority Mail. When I contacted them about the refund, they said they were unable to do so. My senior greyhound who was 12 had a very tough time and she finally recovered after 12 weeks. Kasel Industries only care about the money and certainly not the consumer. Suzanne Reep
